Mindful Parenting: being a parent can be very rewarding and sometimes very challenging. At times we might feel stressed or even overwhelmed. Mindfulness can help us reduce stress and find greater balance in our lives.
Mindfulness is a way of paying attention to the present moment using mind-body awareness techniques such as meditation, breathing and movement. It can help us develop patience as well as compassion for both ourselves and our children. Mindfulness can also aid in strengthening the bond we have with our children through being more present in their lives.
The mindful parenting course is for parents who want to understand their parenting style better and learn new ways of relating to their children. It is suitable for parents with children from 0-18 years old.
The course was designed for parents with or without meditation experience. Past participants can expect to deepen their mindfulness practice while those new to mindfulness will learn how to establish and maintain a daily practice. Participants will also utilize methods from integrative psychotherapy and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
During the mindful parenting course we will explore parenting styles and discover how mindfulness can help us step out of unwanted patterns. Participants will also learn how to apply mindfulness at home in everyday situations with their children.
In order to achieve the most benefit out of the course, there is a strong emphasis on committing to practicing mindfulness daily at home using the guided audio meditations provided.
The program consists of 4 lessons lasting two hours each, plus an extra silent half-day retreat. The course includes the following components:
• Telephone intake (for participants who have not done an 8 week course with us)
• Guided mindfulness meditation during each class
• Group discussions and ‘mindful’ sharing of experiences
• Inquiry into what you are experiencing at home and within each class
• Discourses on how mindfulness can benefit your relationship with your child
• Exploratory exercises used to discover current patterns within your relationship with your child
• Workbook and audio downloads to assist in daily practice
